A branch cannot bear fruit if it is disconnected from the vine. Similarly, a believer cannot flourish if he or she is disconnected from Christ. Staying connected to God is the secret to a fruitful and successful Christian life. It is not enough to be born again; you must remain in constant fellowship with Him.
Staying connected involves daily prayer and study of the Word. These are the "umbilical cords" through which we receive spiritual nutrients from God. When you neglect these disciplines, you become spiritually weak and vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy. You start to rely on your own strength, which will eventually fail you.
Connection also involves obedience. Jesus said, "If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love." When you live in disobedience, you are creating a barrier between you and God. While He still loves you, the flow of His power and peace into your life is hindered. Obedience keeps the connection strong and clear.
The benefit of staying connected is that you will bear much fruit. You will experience the peace that surpasses understanding, the joy that is full of glory, and the strength to overcome every trial. This year, make it your priority to stay connected to the Vine. Don't let anything—work, family, or hobbies—take the place of your intimacy with God.
